What We Do

“The BMC encourages the growth and development of music appreciation and performance in the community.”  (Mission statement)

The BMC offers a series of nine concerts open to the public and free of charge, on the first Wednesday of the month from September through June except January. They feature local musicians and professional artists, including WWU Music Department faculty and Whatcom Symphony Orchestra members, and also performers based elsewhere in the U.S. or Canada.

The BMC supports young musicians by sponsoring competitions in various instruments and voice. We grant monetary awards to students who demonstrate talent, perseverance and fine musicianship. Auditions are held to determine winners.

The evening series Night Beat is eclectic and reaches a new public in a relaxed setting. Our goal is always to make good music accessible to everyone. In both our daytime and evening series, our emphasis is on classical music, though some programs can explore other genres.

How Can I Get Involved?

Donations, dues and volunteering support BMC activities. Membership dues – a mere twenty-five dollars ($25) per person/per year – are vital to the BMC and go a long way in supporting music in the community. Please print our brochure which includes a membership form  and mail to us or bring at our next concert with your check made out to BMC.

BMC is a member-run, volunteer-based organization. Over 30 volunteers help build and run BMC. Please consider offering your energy, ideas and talent when you join BMC. Executive Board meetings are the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church. Let us know of your interests and skills.

Donations and Tax Exemptions

The BMC is approved as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization under the rules of the Internal Revenue Service. Gift giving through donations or estate planning is tax deductible to the extent of the law. Any gift to support the mission of the BMC is always appreciated. Some of our special funds for your gift consideration are: Student Awards, Piano Maintenance Fund, and Special Future Performances. Consider honoring the memory of a loved one by making the BMC the beneficiary of your philanthropy. Please ask if your employer has a gift-matching program.
